Behind the *Beans*
Our Voyageurs brew bags feature single-origin beans from fair trade cooperatives of native Mayan farmers in the Sierra Madre mountain regions of Chiapas, Mexico. The farms here focus on sustainable shade-growing practices that protect forests from clear-cutting and promote the protection of migratory bird populations by encouraging a biological diversity of plants and animals in the region. This coffee delivers a robust, full-bodied cup with notes of dark chocolate, roasted pecans, maple syrup, and dried fruit. The Voyageurs name is a nod to one of our favorite U.S. National Parks, a place that hides its pristine untouched wilderness behind tough trekking. This robust dark roast is a reflection of the hard work needed to unlock everything Voyageurs NP has to offer.
How to Brew
Simply drop a brew bag into your vessel of choice, add water, and let it steep overnight in the night air (or your fridge). If a hot cup is preferred, steep in hot water for 4-5 minutes! Wake up to clean, balanced coffee without the bitterness or hassle of instant, drip, or French press camp setups. No cleanup. No compromise on quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a brew bag?
Bear Box Brew brew bags are single-serve coffee sachets filled with real ground coffee. You steep it in hot or cold water like tea, then remove it when brewing is complete. Brew bags are an alternative to instant coffee, French press, and AeroPress for camping, by providing a simple way to make real coffee anywhere you have water and a mug.
Is this just fancy instant coffee, or something different?
No. Brew bags are not instant coffee. It is real ground single-origin coffee brewed in a bag, not freeze-dried or soluble coffee. The result is a smooth, full-bodied coffee, with the same convenience as instant coffee. You’ll notice the difference most in body and flavor clarity.
Do I need any equipment besides a mug?
No. You only need a mug (or any vessel) and water. No grinder, filters, French press, AeroPress, or other coffee equipment is required. If you want it hot, you will need a way to heat water.
What is the easiest way to make coffee while camping or traveling?
The easiest way to make camp coffee is using Bear Box Brew brew bags. You simply add one brew bag to hot or cold water and steep it like tea, then remove the bag when finished. There is no grinder, no press, no filters, and no cleanup required. This makes it one of the simplest ways to make real coffee while camping with minimal gear.
How do I brew it?
To brew, place one bag in hot water and steep for 4–5 minutes, or add cold water and let it sit overnight. Discard or compost the brew bag and drink. That’s it. This process works like steeping tea, but with freshly ground coffee instead of leaves.
Can I use this for backpacking trips?
Yes. Brew bags are designed for backpacking and travel where space, weight, quality, and cleanup matter. There is no equipment required and minimal waste, making them ideal for trail use, camping, or overland/car/van travel.
Are brew bags lightweight enough for backpacking when I’m counting grams?
Yes. Each Bear Box Brew brew bag weighs just 0.5 oz (14 g), making them an ultralight option for backpacking and travel. For comparison, an AeroPress setup typically weighs around 6.5–8 oz depending on accessories, plus filters and cleanup gear. Brew bags offer a lightweight alternative to bulky brewing gear without resorting to instant coffee.
Can I drink it cold if I don’t have a stove/heat source?
Yes. Cold steeping works very well with brew bags. Just add water and steep overnight for a smooth, low-bitter coffee. This method highlights the natural sweetness and subtle flavor notes of the beans.
How much caffeine is in it?
Each brew bag typically contains about one standard cup of coffee’s worth of caffeine, usually around 80–120 mg. Exact levels vary based on steep time, water amount, and natural bean variation. You can make it stronger or lighter by adjusting steep time and water volume.
How many cups does one brew bag make? Can I re-use a brew bag?
One brew bag is designed for one full cup of coffee (about 12 oz). You can stretch it for a lighter second cup by adding more water, but flavor and caffeine content will be milder.
How are brew bags different from a French press or AeroPress?
French presses and AeroPress systems can produce great coffee, but they require extra gear, setup, and cleanup. Brew bags remove all equipment and cleanup and simplify the process to just steeping coffee in water. For camping, backpacking, or travel, this makes them a more convenient, low-mess alternative.
What is the brew bag made of?
The brew bag is made from plant-based PLA fiber that is commercially compostable in industrial composting facilities.
What do I do with the used brew bag?
The brew bags are commercially compostable, meaning they can break down in industrial composting facilities. If you are outdoors, follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out used bags with your trash.
How long do the brew bags stay fresh?
The brew bags are nitrogen-sealed for freshness. For best flavor, use within 6 months of purchase. They remain shelf stable for up to 1–2 years when stored sealed in a cool, dry place.
Can I use brew bags at home too?
YES! While designed for camping and travel, brew bags are also commonly used at home. They are a simple, no-cleanup option for daily coffee, especially for people who want good coffee without brewing equipment. Brew bags are also great for travel - including on planes and in hotels - to replace mediocre traditional offerings in these settings.
